NAAFS Spohn vs Hawk 2 Report


Saturday May 21st the NAAFS put on another great show with Spohn vs Hawk 2. The Main Event, Dan Spohn vs John Hawk was a war and both fighters showed why they are Main Event Fighters. Both should have their heads held high. There were several other great fights, and some exciting finishes.

1. Amateur Super Heavyweight
Matthew Paeth (1-1 X-Factor MMA) vs Johnny Griffin Jr. (0-1 Independent)

RD 1: Paeth shoots in and gets a slam. He lands some shots and is warned for hitting the back of the head. Griffin gets half guard. Paeth is able to get his back but Griffin is able to stand up. They clinch on the cage and Paeth tries for a double leg takedown. Griffin lands a nice knee to the body and Paeth takes him down. Paeth lands body shots from the top and gets his back. He lands hard body shots. Griffin is able to stand and they trade shots with Griffin getting the better of it. Griffin has him hurt against the cage but Paeth is saved by the bell.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Paeth

RD 2: Paeth lands a jab and they clinch. Paeth trying for a double leg and finally gets it. In half guard Paeth lands a couple punches. Action slows. Paeth postures up and then stands up. Griffin drops him with a hook for the k.o..

2. Amateur Bantamweight
Ralph Graham (0-0 World Class MMA) vs Jarrell Hodge (0-0 Brickhouse MMA)

RD 1: Hodge hurts him with a punch and gets a takedown into mount. Graham Gives up his back but then pulls guard. Hodge stands up. Leg kick by Graham. They clinch on the cage and Hodge lands a good knee. Hodge hurts him with a two punch combo. Graham takes it down and gets his back. Graham looking for a rear naked. He now lands body shots. Hodge sweeps and gets on top as the round ends.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Hodge

RD 2: They clinch in the center of the cage and quickly separate. Both are throwing hard shots and then Hodge gets a takedown against the cage. Hodge gets side control and tries for an arm. Graham pulls out and is on top. Graham is warned for hitting the back of the head. Graham looking for a guillotine but Hodge pulls out and is on top. Graham holds him close. Hodge gets the mount and lands shots. Now he is in north south position and then side control. Hodge lands several shots to the head. Hodge gets his back and gets the rear naked for the tap right at the end of the round.

Result: Jarrell Hodge by tapout (Rear naked Choke) at 3:00 of Round 1

3. Amateur 135LBS
Trisha Barr (3-4 Infinity MMA) vs Ashley Hawkins (1-0 Team Bundy)

RD 1: Barr charges in and lands some shots. They clinch on the cage and Hawkins tries a throw. Hawkins lands a knee to the body followed by a punch to the body. Both lands some knees. Barr lands a short head punch. Lots of battling for position. Hawkins lands a knee to the body. Barr lands a good punch and Hawkins grabs a leg. Barr pulls the leg out and lands a cross.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Hawkins

RD 2: Leg kick by Hawkins. Barr lands punches and they clinch. The ref takes a point from Hawkins for grabbing the cage. Barr hurts her with a punch and they clinch. Hawkins lands a knee and Barr answers with some uppercuts. Hawkins lands a body shot and Barr lands a knee to the leg. Hawkins looks for a guillotine but couldn't get it as the round ends.
I scored RD 2: 10-8 Barr

RD 3: Barr lands punches and Hawkins a push kick. They clinch and Barr lands body shots. Hawkins gets a takedown and Barr looks for a guillotine but Hawkins pulls out. Body shots by Hawkins but Barr defends well and the ref stands them. Barr lands some punches and Hawkins a leg kick. Barr lands a hard cross and they clinch. Barr grabs a leg looking for the takedown as the round ends.
I scored RD 3: 10-9 Barr
My score card: 29-27 Barr

Result: Trisha Barr by Majority Decision (28-28/29-27/29-27)

4. Amateur Lightweight
Bill Gingery (5-8 Fight Farm) vs Codean Roff (5-5 Independent)

RD 1: Both fighters come out throwing. They clinch against the cage. Gingery uses a foot stomp. They battle for position and Gingery lands a punch. Roff lands a knee to the body and Gingery lands a knee to the leg. Gingery looks for and gets the takedown. Gingery lands some shots. Roff with a nice sweep to get on top, but Gingery hooks a triangle and puts Roff to sleep.

Result: Bill Gingery by TKO (Triangle) at 2:59 of Round 1

5. Amateur Bantamweight
Ray Yanez (7-5 Fight Farm) vs Nate Mango (11-6 Independent)

RD 1: Both fighters are circling. Nice punch by mango and followed by another. Yanez shoots and gets a takedown but Mango is back up quickly. Yanez slams him down again. Mango scrambles and gets his back and an armbar for the tap.

Result: Nate Mango by Tapout (Armbar) at 1:25 of Round 1

6. Amateur Featherweight
Russ Brletrick (4-4 Independent Crew) vs Bhrandon Poindexter (6-6 Evolve)

RD 1: Hard kick to the body by Poindexter. Another hard kick to the leg this time. They clinch and Brletrick lands knees. Both trade hard shots and drop down with Brletrick looking for a guillotine. Poindexter pulls out and lands punches. Brletrick is active from the bottom. Poindexter lands body shots and postures up and gets side control. He lands some shots and Brletrick pulls guard. Poindexter lands shots to end the round.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Poindexter

RD 2: Brletrick hurts him with a punch. Poindexter shoots in and gets stuffed. He tries again and Brletrick sprawls and gets north south position. Now moves to side control. Poindexter pulls guard and goes for an arm bu Brletrick pulls out. Body shots by Brletrick and Poindexter gain goes for an arm and Brletrick pulls out, but it looked tight. They stand and Poindexter lands a kick to the body and gets a takedown to end the round.

RD 3: Brletrick lands a hard shot and Poindexter shoots but gets stuffed. Brletrick lands hard shots on the ground and then they stand. Poindexter shoots and gets stuffed again. Brletrick is on top in half guard. They stand and Poindexter gets his back while standing. Brletrick circles and they clinch. Brletrick lands knees and a hard pucnh to the head. Poindexter lands a good knee and rletrick takes him down and lands shots to close the round.

My score card: 29-28 Poindexter

Result: Russ Brletrick by Unanimous Decision (29-28/29-28/29-28)

7. Amateur Lightweight
Dallas Dishman (2-4 Independent) vs Dave Graf (2-3 Brickhouse MMA)

RD 1: Graf tries a superman punch and gets backdropped. Graf is on top landing body shots. Graf pushes him against the cage and is in Dishman's open guard. More body shots by Graf. The ref stands them and Graf drops him with a hook and lands more till the ref steps in.

Result: Dave Graf by TKO at 2:11 of Round 1

8. Amateur 120LBS
Gaily Lapitas (0-0 Independent) vs Rebecca Gruitza (0-1 Team Bundy)

RD 1: They clinch on the cage and Lapitas gets a takedown. Gruitza goes for an arm and has a tight armbar that she holds for awhile. Lapitas pulls out but Gruitza goes for it again. Lapitas pulls out and gets in Gruitza's guard. Lapitas lands two punches to the head. Gruitza has a tight triangle and lands punches. Lapitas is able to hold on till the round ends.

RD 2: Gruitza lands some jabs and then a two punch combo. Gruitza lands more jabs and Lapitas answers with two good punches that are answered by Gruitza. Gruitza lands a leg kick and then another, followed shortly by a third leg kick. Lapitas lands two good crosses. Gruitza lands a superman punch and more punches as Lapitas tries to cover up till the ref steps in.

Result: Rebecca Gruitza by TKO at 2:05 of Round 2

9. Amateur Welterweight
Nick Kilian (5-2 Relson Gracie Cleveland) vs Chris Melillo (6-5 Evolve)

RD 1: Kilian lands some shots and Melillo gets a takedown against the cage. Kilian tries hard and finally gets to his feet. Kilian slams him down and goes for and gets the choke for the tap.

Result: Nick Kilian by Tapout (Guillotine) at 2:01 of Round 1

10. Pro Featherweight
Andrew Huffman (9-12 Demolition) vs Doug Kulbis (8-2 Evolve)

RD 1: Two leg kicks by Huffman and Kulbis lands one of his own. Both trading hard kicks. Both land a good body kick. Kulbis drops him with a kick but Huffman is right back up. Huffman lands a leg kick and Kulbis answers with a hard one of his own. Two kicks to the body by Kulbis. Huffman lands a nice hook. Kulbis lands a good leg kick followed quickly by two more. Both throw and miss a jab. Kulbis with a leg kick that drops him but Huffman gets right up. Huffman lands body shots and gets a takedown landing in guard. . They stand and Kulbis lands a hard leg kick to end the round.

RD 2: Kulbis lands a leg kick. Huffman lands a cross and leg kick and Kulbis answers with a hook. Two good leg kicks by Huffman. Kulbis lands a cross and Huffman answers with a leg kick. Kulbis lands a leg kick and a good cross. Kulbis gets a takedown against the cage. Huffman tries to sweep but can't. Kulbis gets his back and looks for the choke. He gets a rear naked but Huffman gets out. Kulbis has a body triangle and again looks for the choke and gets it this time for the tap.

Result: Doug Kulbis by Tapout (Rear Naked Choke) at 3:40 of Round 2

11. Pro Light Heavyweight
Adam Milstead (10-2 World Class MMA) vs Dane Bonnigson (9-1 USA MMA)

RD 1: Milstead lands a hard punch and Bonnigson shoots in and finishes the takedown. Milstead almost gets up but Bonnigson puts him back down. Bonnigson has side control. Milstead defending well. Milstead pulls guard. Bonnigson lands some body shots. The ref separates them. Milstead tries a spin kick and gets dropped by a hard punch by Bonnigson. Bonnigson lands some more and t ref stops it. Milstead protests the stoppage, but I thought it was good.

Result: Dane Bonnigson by TKO at 3:50 of Round 1

12. Pro Light Heavyweight Title
Dan Spohn (13-4 Buckeye MMA) vs John Hawk (11-2-1 Strong Style)

RD 1: Spohn lands a cross followed by a leg kick. Hawk lands a cross. Spohn charges in but misses a punch. Spohn lands a jab and a cross by Hawk. Hawk lands a jab to the body and a cross to the head. Hawk lands a two punch combo and Spohn answers with a leg kick. Spohn lands a hard cross. Spohn lands another hard shot and Hawk counters. Spohn with a good punch to the body and Hawk lands a two punch combo. Both are landing hard shots. Body kick by Spohn. Spohn lands two leg kicks. Hawk charges in and lands a punch and Spohn counters. Both land good shots highlighted by a cross by Spohn. Both land hard shots to end the round.

RD 2: Good hook by Spohn followed by a leg kick. Hawk hurts him with a punch. Both are landing hard shots. Spohn lands a hard hook followed by a leg kick. Hawk lands a jab. Hard hook by Spohn followed by a hard cross. Spohn lands a leg kick. Hawk lands a good hook. Hawk lands a leg kick and Spohn counters with a hook. Another hard hook by Spohn followed by a cross. Spohn lands a leg kick. Spohn then lands a hook and then they both land good hooks. Hawk with a kick to the body. Accidental low blow by Spohn stops the action. They resume and circle. Two jabs by Hawk followed shortly by another. Spohn hurts him with punches to end the round.

RD 3: Jab by Hawk. Spohn lands a hook. Hawk with a leg kick and two jabs. Spohn counters with a hook and then a body kick. Spohn again with an accidental low blow but the ref missed it, but Spohn show class and lets Hawk recover. Spohn with a body kick and Hawk counters with a punch. Spohn lands a hard hook and Hawk lands a jab. Spohn with a front kick and a leg kick. Hawk lands a cross which is answered by a harder cross by Spohn which is followed by another. Spohn lands a leg kick. Hawk has a small cut under his eye. Both are sweating a lot and slipping on wet spots. Hawk lands a two punch combo. Hawk lands a cross at the end of the round.

RD 4: Hard body kick by Spohn. Both trade hard shots. Hawk tries to push him against the cage but Spohn escapes. Hawk gets him against the cage and lands an elbow. Spohn lands a body kick. Hawk has him against the cage and lands some shots. They separate and Hawk lands a jab. They trade hard shots. Spohn is bleeding from the nose. Hawk lands hard shots on the cage. Hard hook by Hawk followed by two more shots. Spohn lands two jabs. Hawk lands a hook and Spohn answers with a good cross. Hawk puts him against the cage and lands shots. They trade hard shots finishing with a hard hook by Spohn.

RD 5: Two jabs by Hawk. Hawk traps him on the cage and lands a hook and knee to the body. Hawk lands a hard cross. Spohn lands a hard cross and knee to the body. Two jabs by Hawk. Hawk lands more good shots. Leg kick by Spohn and a jab by hawk, followed by another. Hawk lands a hook. Spohn lands a nice two punch combo. Hawk lands a cross and Spohn lands one of his own. Spohn hits a front kick. Hawk lands a cross and Spohn answers with two punches. Spohn lands ahead kick and Hawk a hard hook. Spohn lands a hook right before the end.
